Hi, we are the HK couple who visited the observattory cafe and met you on 19.3.2007. We just returned to Hong Kong today.
Thanks for the good coffee and introduction to the observatory! We also visited the nearby salmon farm as introduced by you and the salmon was delicious. It was a pity that we cannot join the night sky trip that evening. The night sky, as you said, was so spectacular!
It is our pleasure to meet you in NZ. Wish you a happy remaining trip. Do let us know when you come back to Hong Kong!
I have come across this website by accident. I’m a Hong Kong Chinese migrant to New Zealand and have stayed here for 15 years. It is nice to see that you have been around NZ and visiting the attractions.
Funny that as you have been here I went back to Hong Kong in March to visit my family. I didn’t recognize the place at all and I felt like a tourist rather than someone “home”. Eateries like Cova’s simply can’t exist in NZ given that people love casual styles of cafes here. And I couldn’t stop staring at price tags in HK$ while trying to mentally convert them back to NZ $$$ even though I grew up in HK!
To be honest, depending on your backgrounds if you get a full time job you can probably live comfortably middle class in New Zealand but this country will never produce a Li Ks-shing given economically the tax rate is high and fatally most Kiwis have a tall-poppy syndrome (which means they will try to pull down successful people if they are too successful). The flop side is that they are not easy to get. If you get temp, contract types of jobs, then good luck – they could be tough.
If you have time go visit some of the wineries and sample some gourmet produces. I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in NZ and I look forward to see more of your posts about our country!
Oops, forgot to mention more about myself. I’m based in Rangiora just outside Christchurch and one thing is that there are very few Chinese around here and I have not seen more than 4 or 5 from Hong Kong in the whole Christchurch Urban Region. Indeed I think I have seen more Japanese or Koreans than even Chinese around here.
If you have time before returning to HK, come to Rangiora and have a look at a very typical slice of country New Zealand – this is not a place renowned with tourists!

Dear ryan
